Health Minister Jens Spahn has presented the new advertising initiative for vaccinations – which above all also requires support from the economy. RKI boss Wieler warned again of a fourth wave.
Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn and RKI President Lothar Wieler have again appealed to the population to get vaccinated against Corona. “Each individual vaccination decision also determines how safely we can get through autumn and winter together,” said Spahn in Berlin on Wednesday. Wieler warned: “If we don’t drastically increase the current vaccination rates, then the current fourth wave in autumn can take a brilliant course.”
Both pointed out that people who have not been vaccinated are currently being treated for Covid-19 in intensive care units. 90 percent is their share. “The point is that the health system is not overloaded,” said Spahn. The number of unvaccinated people is still too large. At this stand, it could not be ensured that there would not be a very heavy load or overload again.
In order to increase the vaccination rate, Spahn announced a “common vaccination week”. The federal, state and local governments want to jointly and creatively encourage people to vaccinate from Monday under the motto “Here is vaccinated”, which also functions as a hashtag in social media. A separate website will be activated for this purpose. The initiative is supported by the German Trade Association, which is already running its own campaign (“Life instead of lockdown”). The head of the Kik textile company, Patrick Zahn, who sat at the side of Wieler, Spahn and the President of the German Trade Association, Stefan Genth, emphasized that the decisive factor was education, not instruction. Experience has shown that this does not lead to anything.
Only 60 percent have the second vaccination
In response to questions about a possible renewed lockdown, which he would often be asked, Spahn said: “The debate has to go the other way round: we have the means to vaccinate ourselves back into freedom and normalcy.” We have come a long way, “but we still have to convince a few, many more to follow this path with us.”
According to Spahn, 66 percent of the population have been vaccinated at least once, and 61.6 percent have full vaccination protection, as the minister wrote on Twitter. In his assessment, Germany has come through the past year and a half of the pandemic better than other countries. “The UK has more than twice as many deaths as a population as Germany,” he said.
