“A government with an absolute majority does not mean a government without problems”: Marcelo on the controversy over the election results

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said this Saturday that a government with an absolute majority is not a government without problems, since they exist in society and are in the hands of the executive, which must be resolved.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s position was conveyed this Saturday in statements to journalists at the Lisbon Book Fair, when asked about the controversy surrounding the government, given the election results achieved.

“A government with an absolute majority does not mean a government without problems. The government has an absolute majority in parliament, but there is society, and society has problems,” the head of state said.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reiterated that there were already “a few absolute majorities, and the fact that there is an absolute majority does not mean that society does not have problems that the absolute majority also faces that need to be solved.”

Asked about statements made by the Obstetrics Emergency Response Monitoring Committee Coordinator, who believed that a shortage of specialists in public hospitals could lead to the closure of maternity hospitals, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he prefers that “there is a global opinion on this matter, since maybe you need to do several things at the same time.

The President of the Republic believes that, on the one hand, it is necessary to introduce organic changes, on the other hand, to look at the number and distribution of specialists.
