The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Wednesday, regarding the payments to pensioners announced by the government, considered that the basis for calculating pensions for the future is “what is the problem”.
However, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, who answered journalists’ questions at a hotel in Brasilia, stressed that the issue would still be discussed in the Assembly of the Republic.
According to the head of state, “there are two realities” that need to be taken into account, and the first is to “know, yes or no, whether it is possible to decompose what will be next year’s growth to anticipate, given the difficult situation.” lived many Portuguese, part of the payment”.
“The other thing that worries people is knowing later what the basis of the calculation is” for the future, he continued, believing that “that’s the problem: if it’s only that which is half the amount, or if it’s a solid cake” .
The President of the Republic underlined that “this issue will still be discussed” in Parliament, which will decide on a bill through which the government proposes “an increase in pensions in 2023 by 4.43% for pensions up to 886 euros, 4.07% for pensions from 886 up to 2659 euros and 3.53% for other pensions subject to adjustment.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa noted that there is already a “preliminary debate” on this issue, which will “inevitably” be discussed again when the state budget is presented: “Therefore, we still have three points to discuss about this.”
According to Prime Minister António Costa, if the legal formula were applied, the increase in pensions in 2023 would be 7.1% and 8%, but no pensioner will suffer in his income next year thanks to the emergency surcharge he will receive. in October, which is equivalent to half a monthly pension.
