Speaking to reporters in Brasília, Brazil’s capital, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza reminded that the United Kingdom is “Portuguese’s oldest ally” and “could be head of state only to be present on behalf of the Portuguese” at Isabella II’s funeral. ., who died today at the age of 96.
“When they leave, I will naturally be there,” he said, adding that Foreign Minister Joao Gomes Cravinho would also be present at the funeral.
“At the very beginning of his reign, he had a visit at the height of the dictatorship, but it was a great success, in 1957, and he never forgot it. When I was received at Buckingham Palace in 2016, he remembered this, step by step, detail by detail, city by city, city by city, as he also recalled, coming 25 years later, Portugal was about to enter the European community,” the head of the Portuguese state recalled.

Queen Elizabeth II passed away today at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, it was announced through the royal family’s Twitter social network.
