Constitutional Court rejects UNITA appeal

The Constitutional Court dismissed an appeal filed by UNITA, Angolan’s largest opposition party, stressing that the evidence presented “does not allow us to question the overall results” of the elections announced by the National Electoral Commission (NCC).

“The Constitutional Court concludes that the evidence presented and found to be relevant does not allow us to call into question the global results of the national vote count presented by the National Electoral Commission,” the ruling says.

In a decision released today, approved in a plenary session of ten judges, Judge Joseph Neto, appointed by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), voted against the electoral truth reflected in the polls because it is about the legitimization of political power, which, he argues, has not been reached.

Last week, CNE President Manuel Pereira da Silva released the final protocols of the August 24 general elections, in which the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and its candidate João Lourenço were declared the winners with 51.17% of the vote. , followed by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angoa (UNITA) with 43.95%.

With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA 90 deputies, almost twice as many as in the 2017 elections.

The PRS party and the debuting Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) each elect two deputies.

CASA-CE, the National Patriotic Alliance (APN) and P-Njango did not receive seats in the National Assembly, which will consist of 220 deputies in 2022-2027.

UNITA, along with the Democratic Bloc (DB), have filed a contentious electoral appeal with the Angolan Constitutional Court, citing alleged “irregularities in the process” whose decision is due to be made public today when the body denied CASA-CE’s appeal.
