The Secretary General of the PS warned his deputies this Sunday that in an absolute majority they would take blows from the left and right, recommended the principle of dialogue, but, above all, urged them to show their parliamentary majority without complexes.
These messages were conveyed to António Costa at the opening of the Days of the PS Parliament, which will take place until Tuesday in the Leiria region, after speeches by the leader of the Socialist Bench, Eurico Brillante Diaz, deputies from the Socialist Party of Luxembourg and President of the Leirian PS Federation, Walter Cichorro.
The Socialist leader began by mentioning that MPs who had already been in parliament in previous legislatures in which the PS ruled on the basis of a “gadget” in a relative majority situation had the experience of the “patience” of the bench. to their left and take a “hit” from the stands to your right.
“Now, with an absolute majority, the real big difference is that you get hit from all sides. But the absolute majority does not last forever, and the day will come when he will not be beaten by everyone,” he said here. in a calm mood, but did not evoke any reaction from the hall of PS deputies.
However, immediately afterwards, António Costa made a reservation about what he had just said, and was then applauded by the PS deputies: “There is one thing that you should not have the slightest doubt about, because it is much better to have an absolute majority, than not having an absolute majority.
In this part of his brief speech, the Secretary General of the PS said that the opposition parties sought to convey the idea that the absolute majority “was a measure set by the government and not the arithmetic product of the free will of the Portuguese vote.” .
“The Portuguese did not have secret meetings on Saturday evening to agree among themselves how they are going to vote on Sunday, they voted freely, and as a result of this vote, PS received an absolute majority,” he stressed.
In front of PS deputies, António Costa repeated the idea that it is important for the Portuguese to reconcile with an absolute majority – even for political stability in Portugal and for the consolidation of alternatives – and that socialist deputies take a position of dialogue, but with limits.
“Openness to dialogue does not mean a betrayal of the will of the Portuguese not to accept what we are, the majority. Therefore, we are the majority of the dialogue, but we are not the confused majority. We are the majority because the Portuguese wanted it. majority when it is necessary to act and when dialogue is no longer possible, ”the Secretary General of the PS emphasized.
In his speech, he left one more piece of advice to his deputies, saying that they should always be attentive to the common citizen and less to the media bubble and commentators.
“Contrary to the expectation of the polls, contrary to the expectation of what poll commentators were saying and commenting on what they were saying and interpreting the polls, they said that I was tired and that people were fed up with PS. “It’s good that we focused on the most important thing, on a simple citizen,” he said.
According to António Costa, “Whether the commentators like it or not, the citizen is really responsible for everything.”
“What distinguishes democracy from non-democratic regimes is that, at its core, democracy is really a regime of the people, created by the people and for the people. This is not a mode of commentators, for commentators and for commentators,” he stressed.
Again addressing the deputies, as a conclusion, he left them the following recommendation: “When you doubt what is right to do, listen to everyone with respect, and then think with your head, and think that your neighbor or the one who was next to you in the bakery really think about the country,” he added.
At the beginning of his speech, António Costa mentioned that PS has always had results in the Leiria district – one of the “Kavaquistoes” – ten percentage points below the national average, but won the last legislative elections.
“On the mainland, we have already won in all districts,” the Socialist leader remarked, then noting that the PS only needs to be defeated in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, and that this is the next task of the party.
Faced with the lack of response from the public after the launch of the challenge, Antonio Costa humorously commented: “I don’t see much optimism in them, I’m optimistic and I tell you that there are no pessimists in good health.”
