The President of the Republic welcomed this Sunday a large number of students entering higher education institutions, given that this “democratization of access to higher education” has been taking place since April 25th.
Almost 50,000 students were placed in the first stage of the National Competition for Access to Higher Education, the results of which were announced today, which is 81% of the total number of candidates.
It was the second highest value ever, and for Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, it is a mirror of “the democratization of access to higher education.”
“I’m from privileged times: we were a minority of minorities of minorities,” a university professor recalled in statements to reporters during a visit to the Lisbon Book Fair.
For the President of the Republic, this is “a big step towards April 25 and towards democracy, aimed at increasing the access of young Portuguese to higher education.”
In addition to increasing the number of young people studying in higher education, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reminds that “it is also necessary to improve the qualitative side.”
49,806 new students entered this first phase of CNAEN, the second-highest number in 33 years, second only to the nearly 51,000 students who entered the first phase of the competition in 2020.
The number of students who have not yet been counted has also decreased: out of 61,000 candidates, 11,701 have not yet managed to find a place at a university or polytechnic, which is equivalent to 19%, which is four percentage points less than in the previous year.
Approximately half of the candidates managed to secure a seat in their first option, and a total of 82% managed to secure a seat in one of the first three options.
