Armin Laschet’s appearance on the ZDF program “Klartext” on Thursday evening did not seem really aggressive – even though the CDU’s candidate for chancellor is falling behind Olaf Scholz from the SPD more and more in the polls. The traces of a tough election campaign, which is now turning into the home straight, were clearly visible in him.
The chairman of the CDU was particularly puzzled when it came to the subject of “marriage for everyone”. A lawyer living in same-sex marriage wanted to know from him why she was not recognized as the parent of her wife’s child, while that would be completely problem-free for a man who is not the father of the child. Laschet could not give the citizen a satisfactory answer. And when the moderator Bettina Schausten asked how he fundamentally stands for marriage for everyone, Laschet said with a view to the vote in the Bundestag in 2017: “I would have voted for it.”

Since the Prime Minister was not a member of the Bundestag, this question did not arise specifically at the time. Nevertheless, his statement causes astonishment – because when the discussion was held four years ago, Laschet had positioned himself very differently. At that time, all MPs were allowed to vote on marriage for homosexual couples without being forced to join a parliamentary group, as Laschet emphasized again on ZDF. He himself, however, had spoken out against the opening of marriage in interviews.
At the time, he told “Spiegel”: “I am in favor of eliminating all forms of discrimination against people who prefer life forms other than marriage. But like Merkel, I would not have approved the SPD’s proposal because it is constitutionally incorrect. ” The Chancellor had voted against marriage for all in the Bundestag, but in the end the change was still accepted – around a quarter of the Union MPs voted in favor.
Abstention in the Federal Council
In the subsequent vote in the Federal Council, North Rhine-Westphalia did not vote in favor of opening up marriage, but abstained. Laschet and the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia rejected marriage for everyone, while the coalition partner FDP wanted to vote for it. The CDU candidate for chancellor may have changed his mind in the meantime. Nevertheless, many now accuse him of telling the untruth about his original position – another communicative mistake that should not help Laschet and his already ailing CDU in the election campaign.
