The trial of the terrorist attacks in Brussels in March 2016 has begun in a court in the Belgian capital. Nine of the 10 accused appeared Monday morning for a preliminary hearing at the court set up for the trial in the converted former NATO headquarters in the north-east of the city.
However, only three of the accused stayed for the preliminary hearing, six decided to return to their cells – including Salah Abdeslam, who as the main accused had already been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Paris terrorism trials. The tenth suspect is missing. It is believed that he died in Syria.
During the preliminary hearing, the list of witnesses should be determined and further technical details of the process should be clarified. The twelve jurors are to be selected on October 10 before the indictment is read out at the start of the hearing on October 13.
On the morning of March 22, 2016, a total of three bombs exploded in the Belgian capital – two at Zaventem Airport and one at the Maelbeek metro station near the EU institutions. 32 people lost their lives. An additional three Islamist assassins died. Several hundred people were injured, some seriously.
