Podcast “Ukraine – The Situation”: Masala expects movement in arms deliveries

After the advance of the Ukrainian army, military expert Carlo Masala expects a movement in the debate about the delivery of western main battle tanks. Negotiations could also become likely, he says star– “Ukraine – the situation”.

After the advance of the Ukrainian army, military expert Carlo Masala expects a movement in the debate about the delivery of Western main battle tanks. Masala said on Monday in the stern podcast “Ukraine – the situation”: “I think we’ll be moving dramatically fast over the next few days to the question of armored personnel carriers and main battle tanks.” The delivery of these weapons is “the next logical step” if Ukraine is to be able to repeat its successes. He expects that Germany will also issue export permits if the US decides to supply such weapons. This applies to the Marder armored personnel carrier and probably also to Leopard main battle tanks.

Russia withdraws – will negotiations now take place?

Masala said that “we will only see in the coming days and weeks” whether the events of the weekend marked a turning point in the war. The decisive factor is whether the Russian armed forces are able to stabilize the front and supply their new positions logistically even under the changed conditions. He was surprised when the Russian front collapsed as the Ukrainians advanced. He spoke of “dissolution phenomena”. “The Russian army immediately withdrew from these areas almost without a fight,” he said. He pointed to the soldiers’ low motivation to fight in Ukraine.

Even though Masala warned against hoping for a quick end to the war, he saw better prospects for a negotiated solution. “You are seeing the first signs in Russia that the logic that there is more to be gained than lost from continuing the conflict is beginning to change.” This could pave the way for negotiations without Russian preconditions. Masala expects President Vladimir Putin to remain a key player on the Russian side. “I don’t see Putin’s power in danger,” he said.
