Defense Minister Lambrecht has also drawn a conclusion for Germany from the war in Ukraine when it comes to the military. You have to say goodbye to old self-images.
Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) has described a defensible Bundeswehr as the central authority for services of general interest. “We will no longer be able to live safely in the future with deliberation alone, with recourse to proven Federal Republican traditions. With our old self-image, the future of our children and grandchildren in peace and freedom can no longer be guaranteed,” said Lambrecht on Monday in Berlin a keynote address to the German Society for Foreign Relations (DGAP).
She suggested holding a “National Security Day” once a year in the Bundestag and other places. Politics and society should then discuss aspects ranging from internal security to the intelligence services, from diplomacy to development policy and from the protection of the constitution to the military threat situation.
Anyone who wants a future of peace and freedom must change course now and see military security as a very central task and “then act accordingly,” said Lambrecht. Germany has got used to seeing its own armed forces exclusively as actors in crises, operations abroad or in administrative assistance such as floods. That time is over.
“The Ukraine war showed everyone, including us Germans who are used to peace, that states need armed forces as a last resort, namely whenever an enemy is determined to make invasion, destruction, murder and expulsion their own means,” said Lambrecht. This is now happening in our immediate vicinity. Lambrecht: “The Ukraine only exists today because it can defend itself militarily. We must learn from this: We need strong, combat-ready armed forces so that we can defend ourselves and our alliance if necessary.”
