Under the motto “Hot autumn against social indifference”, thousands in Germany have been protesting against the high energy prices since the announcement of the third relief package. Is radicalization growing or is the “hot autumn” an exaggerated construct?
“It’s important to look at such currents, where this protest comes from and what the origins of it are,” says Jan Kawelke, journalist and podcast host of “Cosmo Machiavelli”, in the 361st episode of “today important”. According to the Saxon Ministry of the Interior, just 16,000 people demonstrated against the ever-increasing energy costs and the policy of the traffic light coalition last Monday in Saxony. Despite the not-unusual crowd, fears of a “hot autumn” are growing as protests get louder and more radical.
The “hot autumn”: worry about radical, violent forces
Jan Kawelke can only explain this by saying that the “hot autumn” is something that causes immediate concern, “also because there is a closing ranks with radical, violent forces.” The podcast host thinks it’s a good thing that people are protesting against poverty, precisely because it’s not really an issue that people usually take to the streets to discuss. “But it’s important to look at who this minority is and how something like that is used for specific purposes.” Because radical forces are always mingling with these protests, such as the right-wing extremist organization Freie Sachsen, which recently wanted to hold a staged show trial against Economics Minister Robert Habeck.

Different measure: Fridays for Future vs. “Hot Autumn”
For Jan Kawelke, in the context of the current wave of protests, it is completely incomprehensible how different measures are used to measure the “hot autumn” compared to the Fridays for Future demonstrations. “I also ask myself where does the fear come from – and why is it not so great with some topics?” If you look at the climate protests, there is a completely different dimension of people taking to the streets. “Why don’t we have such an activation of politics?”
The fact that the climate discourse is based on individual responsibility is one of the biggest problems. “We have to change something in our society, in politics.” And that is only possible if more pressure is put on politicians on these issues. Jan Kawelke believes that if people had thought about social justice and climate justice earlier, none of these problems would exist. “We have to think very differently about how our society works.”
