Israel: Four Palestinians caught after escaping from prison

After breaking out of an Israeli maximum security prison, only two out of six men are on the run. These are Palestinians who are accused of attacking Israelis.

Less than a week after escaping from an Israeli maximum security prison, four out of six Palestinian militants have been recaptured.

Two men were arrested on Friday evening in Nazareth in northern Israel not far from the detention center, the police said. According to media reports, a local resident alerted the security forces after the two asked for food. Hours later, two other escaped inmates were found in a nearby truck parking lot.

The news of the arrests immediately sparked demonstrations in the West Bank, as the newspaper “Times of Israel” reported. Militant Palestinian organizations had hailed the flight as a humiliation for Israel. One of the four captured is the former Palestinian leader Sakaria Subeidi, who was hunted by Israel’s security apparatus during the second Palestinian uprising (“Intifada”) but was granted a temporary amnesty in 2007. Two Palestinians were still on the run on Saturday.

The inmates escaped from Gilboa prison through a tunnel on Monday night. According to media reports, they were behind bars for fatal attacks on Israelis. Police, the domestic secret service Schin Bet and special forces of the army are involved in the search, it said. According to a report by the Jerusalem Post, a total of 200 roadblocks were set up. In addition, the army arrested and interrogated several relatives of the refugees.
