On the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the USA on September 11, 2001, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remembered the victims and helpers of that time.
“On September 11th we will remember those who lost their lives and pay tribute to those who risked everything to help them,” the German politician wrote on Twitter on Saturday. The European Union stood by the United States to defend freedom and compassion against hatred. EU Council President Charles Michel also assured the solidarity of the EU.
The EU foreign affairs representative Josep Borrell called the events of September 11 a “turning point in history”. The EU itself is still conducting five missions today with the mandate to fight terrorism. Around 3,000 people were killed in the attacks.
According to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the attackers did not manage to undermine belief in freedom and democracy. With the attacks on the “greatest democracy in the world”, the terrorists had tried to destroy the trust of free people around the world in open societies, Johnson said in a video message on the 20th anniversary.
