Union candidate Armin Laschet would be his first foreign trip to Paris if he was elected Chancellor – just like his SPD competitor Olaf Scholz.
In an interview with “Bild am Sonntag” he referred to his visit to France’s President Emmanuel Macron last Wednesday – it was the ninth meeting in the past three years. “Our personal ties are close and trusting, we both know that the Franco-German relationship is existential for Europe,” he said. “So: Paris.”
In a debate in June, Laschet had left the answer to a question about the possible first Chancellor trip open – unlike Scholz and the Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock. SPD Chancellor candidate Scholz said at the time that he would travel to Paris – Franco-German cooperation was central to moving Europe forward. Baerbock said: “To Brussels, because German foreign policy must always be European.”
In surveys, the Union is currently a noticeable distance behind the SPD in second place, while the Greens are several points behind in third place.
