After the Azerbaijani attacks, Armenia reports more deaths and expects the number to rise further. Meanwhile, Baku is defending the military approach.
After the most recent attacks by Azerbaijan, Armenia now puts the number of soldiers killed in its own ranks at 135. But the number will probably continue to rise, said Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the capital Yerevan. On the Azerbaijani side there was talk of 71 deaths.
Authoritarian-led Azerbaijan attacked Armenia on Tuesday night, citing an alleged previous Armenian provocation as the justification. Many observers, on the other hand, assume that the authoritarian leadership of the oil- and gas-rich South Caucasus republic took advantage of the fact that Russia, Armenia’s protecting power, is currently occupied with the war against Ukraine.
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev defended the move in a speech at a meeting of heads of state in Uzbekistan, including Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. At the same time he reaffirmed the goal of a peace treaty with neighboring Armenia – “without any preconditions”.
Disproportionately quiet location
According to Armenian sources, a ceasefire was agreed on Thursday after two days of heavy fighting. Since then, the situation has seemed relatively calm. In the direction of Jermuk near the border, the Azerbaijani troops had penetrated about 7.5 kilometers deep into Armenian territory as a result of the latest attacks, the general staff in Yerevan said on Friday.
The two ex-Soviet republics have been at war with each other for decades over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. According to information from Yerevan, this time it was not the conflict region that was attacked, but regions in the heartland of Armenia.
Armenia’s ambassador to Germany, Viktor Yengibaryan, warned of a renewed escalation of the situation. “We have information that Azerbaijan is preparing for new aggression,” Yengibaryan told the editorial network Germany. “Due to the active efforts of our international partners, there is now a ceasefire, but the situation could escalate at any second.”
