Former Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) does not want to run for the Bundestag again after the current legislative period. In an interview with the “Tagesspiegel”, when asked if he would compete again in 2025, Schäuble replied: “No, but that’s not even newsworthy.” Schäuble turned 80 on Sunday. The trained lawyer has been a member of the Bundestag since 1972, making him the longest-serving member of parliament.
In the “Tagesspiegel” interview, Schäuble made it clear that although he had remained conservative, some attitudes had also changed. “When I was young, it took a while in Germany to understand that discrimination against homosexuality, for example, is completely out of the question. On the other hand, I still think it’s legitimate to say that in in biology, bisexuality for reproduction is the rule,” said Schäuble.
In view of the increased energy prices and efforts by the federal government to relieve people in the energy crisis, Schäuble warned against unrealistic promises. “Of course, the state has to intervene when the cost of living increases so much. But the state must not create the illusion that this is limitless,” said Schäuble.
