Environment: Climate activists in custody after blockade in coal-fired power plant

Climate activists broke into the site of the coal-fired power plant in Jänschwalde in southern Brandenburg on Monday morning. The police have started the evacuation.

After climate activists blocked tracks and conveyor systems on the site of the Jänschwalde lignite-fired power plant in Brandenburg, the police began to clear the occupied areas. The first people were taken into custody on Monday, said police spokesman Maik Kettlitz. The police are in the process of releasing activists from the tracks and conveyor systems in three different areas.

The operator Leag had previously announced that two blocks had been completely taken off the grid because of the action. This means that only half of the power plant is still in operation.

The police were initially unable to provide any information on the exact number of people on the premises. She received support from the federal police.

The climate activists penetrated the power plant site in southern Brandenburg on Monday morning. The group “Involuntary Fire Brigade” announced that around 40 people blocked, among other things, the coal bunker and the track connections to the power plant.

A spokesman for the energy company Leag confirmed that activists are at the so-called trench bunker, where coal is stored. The operator of the power plant spoke of an “attack on the security of supply”.

“It is clear that this is a criminal offence,” said the police spokesman. Investigated for disruption of public services and trespassing. According to Kettlitz, a protest should not be carried out at the expense of the energy supply.

The lignite power plant in Jänschwalde is the third largest in Germany. The plant is about 15 kilometers north of Cottbus.
