SOS Children’s Villages: Winter in Ukraine “historically new challenge”

Winter in Ukraine comes with energy shortages and war. The SOS Children’s Villages expect hundreds of thousands of people, especially in the east of the country, who will have to flee because of the winter.

The SOS Children’s Villages expect hundreds of thousands more refugees due to the threatening harsh winter in Ukraine. “We are dealing with a historically new challenge: freezing cold, energy shortages and war at the same time,” said the head of the aid organization in Ukraine, Serhii Lukashov. He expects that in the eastern regions of Donetsk, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv, which were severely affected by the Russian war of aggression, another half a million people will flee due to the conditions.

The local authorities have already stated that it is impossible to restore the heating systems, electricity and water supply in time for the winter. With the threat of temperatures of up to -15 degrees, residents are asked to leave their homes and find accommodation in central and western Ukraine. But even there, there is no guarantee that they would be adequately cared for, Lukashov warned. There is a risk of further rocket attacks. In addition, the supply systems in the cities are overburdened by taking in refugees.

It doesn’t look any better in the countryside: Many internally displaced people are overwhelmed by the situation there, said Lukashov. “They don’t know where to get wood or coal given the general scarcity of resources, and most of them don’t even have the money for it.”
