The South Caucasus republic of Azerbaijan attacked Armenia last week. Both sides reported dead. Now the USA has tried to mediate between the conflicting parties.
After Azerbaijan’s attack on neighboring Armenia, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken brought together representatives of the conflicting parties. “As I conveyed at the meeting, it is time for the troops to withdraw and for the diplomats to return to the negotiating table,” Blinken wrote on Twitter on Monday evening (local time). He was the host of direct talks between Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirosian and Azerbaijani counterpart Yejhun Bayramov, it said.
Photos showed him shaking hands with the two in a courtroom in New York. Blinken met politicians on various topics at the 77th general debate of the UN General Assembly on Monday. He is also hosting a food security summit on Tuesday.
The South Caucasus Republic of Azerbaijan attacked Armenia on Tuesday night. Azerbaijan accuses Armenia of having previously provoked what the militarily weak neighboring country rejects. After heavy fighting, a ceasefire is currently in force. The ex-Soviet republics have been at war with each other over the Nagorno-Karabakh region for decades. Observers assume that Azerbaijan’s authoritarian leadership took advantage of the fact that Armenia’s protecting power Russia is preoccupied with the war against Ukraine.
