The pressure to supply more weapons to Ukraine is growing. Germany has announced more arms aid. But the desired battle tanks are not among them. The FDP demands explanations from Scholz.
The FDP politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) before his UN speech to explain Germany’s reluctance to deliver tanks to Ukraine. It is an important sign that Scholz condemned Russian war crimes before the UN General Assembly and thus also wanted to counter Russian war propaganda, said the chair of the Defense Committee of the German Press Agency in Berlin. She demanded: “He should take the opportunity to explain to our allies and friendly partner countries why his advisers advise him not to supply Ukraine with the urgently needed tanks.”
Germany can no longer afford to delay this decision because “our values of freedom and democracy are also being defended in Ukraine,” said Strack-Zimmermann. And: “The United States Ambassador to Germany, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have clearly asked Germany to take the lead in Europe and also to supply Ukraine with tanks.” With the attitude declared by Scholz that Germany would not go it alone and act in unison with allies, “it is probably more the wish than the reality”.
Scholz arrived in New York on Monday evening (local time) for a three-day visit, the focus of which will be a speech to the UN General Assembly. He also wants to take part in a food security summit and hold several bilateral talks, including with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. For the 64-year-old SPD politician, according to information from those around him, it is his first visit to the world metropolis.
