On World Children’s Day, Family Minister Paus calls for greater efforts to combat child poverty. She referred above all to the children who have to flee because of the Ukraine war.
Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) has called for greater efforts to combat child poverty in view of the consequences of the war in Ukraine. “Millions of children are fleeing, trying to get by in a foreign country,” said the politician on World Children’s Day this Tuesday in Berlin. “And here, too, the consequences of the war hit families and children particularly hard.” If electricity and food became more and more expensive, then that would put poor families in particular under extreme pressure. “Money that was recently there for crayons, new sneakers or the petting zoo is now being spent to create the most elementary things – to fill the fridge,” said Paus. The federal government sees this and wants to permanently combat child poverty.
According to the Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk, almost three million children in Germany are affected by poverty. “Child policy is not a minor matter,” said Thomas Krüger, President of the German Children’s Fund. Basic child security is needed.
The government wants to introduce such basic child security by 2025. Various family benefits such as child benefit are to be bundled into it.
