In this country, too, they want to send a clear signal shortly before the upcoming election and demand an “immediate systemic change,” said the German activist Carla Reemtsma of the dpa. The last few months have shown “how mendaciously the parties are campaigning against the climate crisis without even advocating adequate measures to combat it.”
She accused the governing parties of driving global warming even further and of putting the “profit of fossil corporations before climate protection and human life”, for example by “clearing forests for highways” or building the Nordstream 2 gas pipeline.
Without massive pressure from society, a future federal government will not be able to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial age, explained Reemtsma further.
The movement expects more than 1,100 strikes in 78 countries on September 24th, and 277 actions have been registered throughout Germany, as Fridays for Future Germany announced on Monday before the official announcement by the German Press Agency.
The global strike call under the motto # AllefürsKlima was also joined by 200 civil society organizations, including churches and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as 4,000 companies, the organization further announced.
The global movement Fridays for Future has been on strike for three years for more effective climate protection and compliance with the Paris climate protection agreement, which the international community agreed on in 2015, in order to curb progressive global warming.
The organization’s most recent global climate strike took place on March 19 of this year.
