Goethe University: Medical applicants are allowed to study after a breakdown

First accepted, then rejected again: 282 applicants had to fear for their place in Frankfurt in the last few weeks. The university, awarding authority and politicians have now found a solution.

Good news for those affected by the admission error for human medicine at Goethe University: You are now receiving an offer for a place at the university, as the university reported. Those affected would be informed individually on Wednesday by the Foundation for University Admissions, which allocates places nationwide.

Due to a transmission error, the university had reported too many free places to the foundation. As a result, 251 applicants for medicine and 31 applicants for dentistry were initially accepted, but this was withdrawn a day later.

A solution had already been found for applicants for dentistry at the beginning of September so that they could study in Frankfurt after all. The Goethe University wants to take on students “well above capacity”.

Those affected are distributed nationwide

In human medicine, the Goethe University was unable to find a solution on its own, as the award is being made nationwide. After a decision by the Conference of Ministers of Education, the foundation initially suspended the move-up procedure, with universities throughout Germany reporting unoccupied places. These would now be distributed to those affected, as the university explained – according to the offer that would have been available to them without the overbooking error.

According to its own statements, the Goethe University provides “up to 60 study places”, the rest get offers in other cities. University President Prof. Enrico Schleiff was “relieved and happy”. Enormous efforts have been made to set up and implement such a procedure in a legally secure and fair manner.
