Energy crisis, Ukraine war – and then Corona. Stricter corona protection measures will apply again on October 1st. The Minister of Health also justifies this in view of the current crisis situation.
Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) justified the soon to be stricter corona protection rules, also with a view to the tense overall situation with the energy crisis.
“What we are doing is also a contribution to the stability of this crisis situation, which could await us in the fall,” he said on the ARD program “Maischberger” on Wednesday evening.
He doesn’t want to be responsible for going unprepared into a situation in which there is an energy crisis, the Ukraine war is ongoing, and “where we then also lose the infrastructure because the clinics are suddenly overcrowded because the people are all sick . This simply has to be averted.”
Stricter rules from October 1st
The amended Infection Protection Act provides for more extensive rules on masks and tests from October 1st to April 7th, 2023. The federal states should be able to impose the requirements for mask requirements indoors and expand them in a critical situation. Nationwide, FFP2 masks are to be compulsory in clinics, nursing homes, medical practices and long-distance trains – but they are to be omitted on airplanes.
The background is that a more critical corona situation with higher numbers of infections is expected again in the colder season. “If autumn and winter are good, it won’t be that bad – wonderful. Then we were well prepared, then it was worth it,” said Lauterbach.
