“Climate strike”: Fridays For Future demonstrates in 200 German cities

100 billion euros: Chancellor Olaf Scholz made this special fund available for the Bundeswehr in connection with the “turning point”. That should also work in climate protection, believes Fridays for Future.

Demonstrations for more climate protection are planned throughout Germany and many other countries this Friday. The climate protection movement Fridays For Future called for a worldwide “climate strike”. In Germany alone there are said to be protests in more than 200 cities. Larger demonstrations are to take place in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne, among other places. 270 actions are planned. The call is supported by many nature and environmental protection associations.

Fridays For Future calls for the “radical expansion” of renewable energies and the rapid implementation of a consistent turnaround in traffic. A special fund of 100 billion euros is required for this. This should then also ensure permanent access to affordable energy for all people. “Climate protection and social balance are not an either/or, but only possible together,” emphasizes the movement. Climate justice must also be established internationally, and poor countries must be relieved of their debts.

8,000 participants have registered for the demonstration in downtown Berlin. The author Marc-Uwe Kling (“The Kangaroo Chronicles”) and the band Von Wegen Lisbeth are to appear. The demonstration starts at 12:00 p.m. in Invalidenpark and leads through the government district.
