Anti-Semitism allegations: Gil Ofarim’s lawyers speak of a “show trial”

Ofarim says a Leipzig hotel asked him to take off his Star of David necklace. According to the assessment of the judiciary, the incident did not happen that way. Now the singer is on trial.

After defamation proceedings were opened against Gil Ofarim, the musician’s defense made allegations against the Leipzig judiciary. From October 24th, the singer will have to answer to allegations of anti-Semitism against a hotel in Leipzig. A public show trial should be carried out, said Ofarim’s Munich lawyers Alexander Stevens and Markus Hennig on Thursday. It goes with the fact that the opening decision of the Leipzig district court has not yet reached all defenders.

Ofarim, 40, is on trial on charges of false accusation and defamation after he revealed in a viral video a year ago that a hotel worker asked him to remove his Star of David necklace so he could check in. According to the public prosecutor’s office in Leipzig, the incident did not happen that way. The employee concerned had filed a complaint. According to the court, he appears as a joint plaintiff in the process.

According to the lawyers, the fact that a show trial is now to be carried out against the musician is also shown by the number of judges in the criminal chamber, which is otherwise only provided for exceptionally serious crimes such as murder and manslaughter. In addition, the defense attorneys stated that the court itself was probably not convinced of the musician’s conviction if it pointed out that Ofarim’s behavior could also be regarded as “slander”.
