US Vice President Kamala Harris is traveling to Japan and South Korea next week.

Harris will attend a state memorial service for Japan’s murdered ex-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, but will also hold political talks, a senior government official announced on Friday. The office of US President Joe Biden’s deputy had already announced the travel plans at the beginning of September, and the details have now followed.

Harris will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo on Monday. Meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck Soo, both of whom are also arriving for Abe’s memorial service, are scheduled to take place in the Japanese capital on Tuesday. The state ceremony for the former Japanese prime minister, who was assassinated in early July, is scheduled for Tuesday.

Harris plans to meet with Japanese business leaders and visit a military base in Yokosuka on Wednesday. On Thursday, Harris will finally travel to South Korea, where she wants to meet President Yoon Suk Yeol, among other things.

Biden himself flew to Japan and South Korea in May. The two states are the most important US allies in Asia.
