Party conference: Bavaria’s Green Party leader accuses Union of “blatant populism”.

At the start of the party conference in Landshut, Bavaria’s leader of the Greens takes a hard stance on the Union: “We’re getting closer to a Trumpization of the Union,” criticizes Sarnowski. That was “completely irresponsible”.

A year before the state elections in Bavaria, the Greens state chairman Thomas von Sarnowski committed his party to the fight for government participation in the state. At the same time, he sharply attacked the Union and the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder at a party conference in Landshut on Saturday. “We’re getting closer to a Trump-ization of the Union,” he said, referring to controversial former US President Donald Trump.

The Union relies on “clumsy populism”, hitting public broadcasting and gender, or scaring people with warnings of a blackout. The Green criticized: “The destructive populism of the CSU endangers the cohesion of our democracy – that’s completely irresponsible.”

In the afternoon, the Greens want to choose their top duo for the state elections in Bavaria at the party conference. As in 2018, the two parliamentary group leaders Ludwig Hartmann and Katharina Schulze are to lead the party into the election. In a recent survey, the Greens were in second place with 18 percent, but noticeably behind the CSU with currently 40 percent.

In the 2018 state election, the Greens had achieved the best result in their history in Bavaria with 17.6 percent. Even then, the cabinet table in the State Chancellery was within reach. However, the CSU decided on the Free Voters as coalition partner, both parties want to continue their cooperation after 2023.
