STORY: According to a human rights organization, numerous demonstrators were arrested again on Saturday during protests against the mobilization in Russia. The independent protest observation group OVD-Info spoke of more than 700 arrests in 32 cities. In St. Petersburg and Moscow, police officers cracked down on demonstrators. Unauthorized rallies are illegal under Russian anti-protest laws. In Germany, too, Russians took to the streets on Saturday to protest against the war in Ukraine and mobilization, including 27-year-old Kyrill from Moscow. He no longer wants to return to his homeland. “I am here because I am seeking political asylum. I have military training and in Russia I could get a mobilization letter and I would be obliged to join the army.” The association Free Russia NRW had called for the rally in Düsseldorf. Club board member Yuri Nikitin believes that resistance to the war in Russia will increase. For a long time, Putin refused to resort to mobilization. “Because of course he knew that it didn’t necessarily bring praise and that of course from the group of the population that supported him the most. And when the first bodies come back to Russia, then we assume that there will be more unrest there too in Russia.” Indeed, Russia’s first mobilization since the Second World War, ordered by Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, is apparently also attracting increasing criticism from supporters of the president. The editor-in-chief of the state broadcaster RT, Margarita Simonyan, railed against the chaotic actions of the authorities on her Telegram channel. In the past few days there have been reports from different parts of Russia of men who have received draft orders despite having no military experience or being over the draft age.
