More than a dozen people, including students and teachers, have been killed in an attack on a Russian school. According to the Russian Ministry of the Interior, the perpetrator then took his own life.
According to authorities in the city of Izhevsk, several people were killed and injured when shots were fired in a Russian school on Monday. The national investigative committee spoke of 13 dead, including seven children. The seven adults are teachers and security guards. The Interior Ministry of the Udmurt Republic had previously spoken of 6 dead and 20 injured.
The investigative authority confirmed that there were 21 injured, including 14 children and 6 adults. “In Udmurtia today there was a tragedy in Izhevsk at school 88. A person who has not yet been identified broke into the school and killed a security guard, that is already known,” Governor Alexander Brechalov said shortly after the crime. “There are child casualties and injuries,” he said. The perpetrator then killed himself, as confirmed by the region’s interior ministry.
The Kremlin described the act as a “terrorist act”. “President (Vladimir) Putin is deeply saddened by the deaths of people, children at the school where the terrorist act took place,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
In the afternoon, the investigators also named the man’s identity, saying it was a 34-year-old who was once a student there. Kremlin spokesman Peskov said he “apparently belonged to a neo-fascist organization or group.” Investigators said the man was wearing a black T-shirt with Nazi symbols and a balaclava.
Putin has already spoken to the regional leadership and members of the government, who should take care of the injured, Peskov said. The Ministry of Civil Defense flies doctors, psychologists and other specialists to the Udmurtia region.
According to official information, 982 students study at school number 88 with around 80 teachers. In Russia there have already been multiple rampages at educational institutions with many dead and injured.
