Thousands of guests attended a memorial service for the assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo. Among the 4,300 guests were around 700 foreign officials and dignitaries such as US Vice President Kamala Harris and the Prime Ministers of South Korea, India and Australia. Germany should be represented by former Federal President Christian Wulff. The last state funeral was in 1967. The government is spending the equivalent of almost 12 million euros on the event – an amount that has caused resentment in times that are often economically difficult for many citizens. Despite numerous expressions of condolences from the population, there were numerous protests in the run-up to the event. Abe’s assassination at a campaign rally on July 8 had also sparked a spate of revelations about links between Abe’s ruling LDP and the Unification Church. Critics call the faith community a sect. Incumbent Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose sympathy ratings have fallen to an all-time low as a result of the controversy, apologized and vowed to sever ties between his party and the church.
