Shortly before the federal election, CDU politician Merz railed against SPD chancellor candidate Scholz. He accuses him of financial scandals – and sees his own party on the better home stretch.
The CDU economic expert Friedrich Merz sees SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz increasingly on the defensive because of alleged misconduct in the Federal Ministry of Finance.
“People are starting to think about whether Olaf Scholz is really the right Federal Chancellor for the Federal Republic of Germany,” said Merz at an appearance with Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet in Stuttgart. “When you see the number of financial scandals he’s involved in,” doubts grow. Merz was also irritated by how lax Finance Minister Scholz was dealing with the investigation against his State Secretary Wolfgang Schmidt. Schmidt himself is not acceptable. “And this man should be head of the Federal Chancellery?” Said Merz.
All of this means that the Union will “regain confidence on the final straight,” the economic expert was convinced. Laschet also said that because of the good poll numbers for the SPD, many had thought that “Olaf Scholz would already have been set”. Now it is becoming apparent that the SPD candidate for chancellor does not have his ministry under control. Laschet had already sharply attacked Scholz several times because of the investigations against the money laundering center of the customs as well as because of the Wirecard bankruptcy and the cum-ex scandal. Finance State Secretary Wolfgang Schmidt is under investigation because he published the court decision on the search in the ministry on Twitter.
