The ruling by the Chemnitz Administrative Court that posters with the slogan “Hang the Greens” are in order has met with increasing criticism. The Saxon Greens want to use a court order to suppress the controversial hate motives.
In Zwickau there is growing resistance to the (partial) approval of the poster “Hang the Greens” by the right-wing extremist splinter party “III. Way”: The Greens want to try to use a stipulation of the court with a spontaneous poster campaign to close the controversial motive push away. The Chemnitz administrative judges had decided that the election posters with the slogan must be 100 meters away from the election campaigns of the Greens. Now members of the Saxon State Green Association want to come to Zwickau to hang up 200 election posters – making it difficult to keep the required distance.
Criticism of the judgment also comes from the President of the German Association of Cities, Burkhard Jung. The association announced that the cities were appalled by this decision by the administrative court. “This election poster is pure agitation,” said SPD politician Jung, who is also Leipzig’s mayor.
He could not understand that the slogan was not banned. “In my eyes, this is not an expression of freedom of expression – it is a call for murder. A call to violence must not be tolerated in public space. This poster is not an election campaign, but hatred. It goes against the basic political rules of our democracy,” said Young.
Mayor continues to go to court
The mayor of Zwickau Constance Arndt (independent) wants to defend herself against right-wing extremist election posters. “We will now file a complaint against the judgment,” she said on Bayerischer Rundfunk. One sticks to the view that the posters “cross borders, are inhuman and endanger democracy,” said the mayor. “Therefore we do not want to deviate from our position.”
Many citizens complained about the election posters. For them, the slogan “Hang the Greens” has clearly exceeded the limit of freedom of expression. In addition, words are often followed by actions – “and I just don’t want to find out when that is”.
The city of Zwickau ordered last week that the posters had to be taken down. The right-wing extremists successfully defended themselves against this with an urgent motion.
The posters are taken down in Bavaria
In contrast to Saxony, posters of the right-wing extremist splinter party “III. Way” with the slogan are generally hung up by the police in Bavaria. The police headquarters were instructed almost a week ago to remove such posters on the basis of the initial suspicion of a public request to commit crimes, said the Ministry of the Interior in Munich. According to the authority, the public prosecutor is involved in every single poster. Since the instruction, the police have removed seven notices. Posters had already been seized in Munich and the Upper Palatinate, twelve in the Upper Palatinate alone. In other federal states, these motifs have not yet appeared.
