Ukraine war: EU condemns annexations (video)

Watch the video: EU condemns annexations, Zelenskyy signs application for accelerated NATO membership.

After the announcement of the annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russian President Putin, Ukraine has applied for accelerated accession to the defense alliance NATO. A video from the Kyiv Presidential Office showed President Zelenskyy signing the motion on Friday. The President also said that Kyiv is ready to negotiate with Russia, but not with current Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy accused the Kremlin of redrawing borders “using murder, extortion, abuse and lies”. Another video shows the President in consultations with the heads of the Ukrainian military. According to official information, it was about military plans to liberate Russian-occupied areas. After the Kremlin’s announcement, international reactions to the move increased in the afternoon, including the EU. European Council President Charles Michel said the Union would never recognize annexation. “This annexation follows mock referendums. This is a dangerous and irresponsible escalation. It is designed to increase the nuclear threat against the rest of the world. The European Union unequivocally rejects and condemns these illegal annexations and will never recognize them, just as it failed to recognize the annexation of Crimea in 2014.” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte made a similar statement. “And to be perfectly clear: The Netherlands will never accept this annexation, nor will it accept the annexation of Crimea. The world will not accept Putin moving recognized borders with the stroke of a pen. We will continue to put pressure on Russia in any way we can exercise to stop Putin’s war machine. That’s why the Netherlands supports a new sanctions package, which is now being intensively worked on, and we continue to help Ukraine with arms and humanitarian aid, among other things.” During a ceremony in the Kremlin on Friday, Putin announced the annexation of the four Ukrainian regions and signed the relevant documents. He refers to so-called referendums carried out by Russia in the affected regions. The United Nations Security Council wants to present a resolution to condemn these votes as “sham referendums”. The Kremlin celebrated the annexation with a concert in Red Square on Friday.
