In announcing a significant security alliance between the United States, Great Britain and Australia, Joe Biden – again – allowed himself a verbal slip.
The heads of government of the USA, Great Britain and Australia actually wanted to announce a comprehensive new defense pact. In order to counter the growing influence of Beijing in the Indo-Pacific, Australia is even supposed to get access to nuclear-powered submarines.
What is most likely to be remembered from Wednesday’s press conference, however, is another verbal slip by US President Joe Biden. Because he apparently forgot the name of his Australian counterpart for a short time.

“Thanks buddy”
US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison met at the virtual presentation of the AUKUS Alliance (based on the abbreviation of the three participating nations).
But when the heads of government spoke one after the other about the great importance of the trilateral agreement, Biden obviously had a misfire. After thanking British Prime Minister Boris Johnson – whom he correctly addressed by his first name – Biden turned to his Australian colleague: “I want to thank the guy from Down Under. Thank you, mate. I really know that appreciate it, Prime Minister, “said the US President.
Biden finally remembers
Morrison took the whole thing calmly, gave his US colleague a smile and pointed a thumb up. According to “Skynews”, the reaction on Twitter was completely different. In hundreds of comments, Biden’s appearance was described as “embarrassing”. Biden later spoke to Morrison by name and a White House official pointed out that the President last spoke to the Australian Prime Minister on September 2, as “Politico” reports.
By the way: Angela Merkel apparently didn’t have Morrison’s name on the slip either – or rather exactly that. According to an article by “ the Chancellor was photographed at a G20 meeting in 2018 leafing through a cheat sheet with a photo and notes about Morrison.
