What seemed out of the question for a long time is being discussed louder and louder in the face of tight polls: another grand coalition after the general election. However, one person will definitely not take part: SPD Vice Kevin Kühnert.
Kevin Kühnert wants to resign as SPD vice-president if a new grand coalition of the SPD and the Union should come about after the general election. The Bundestag candidate announced this on Thursday on the Reddit Internet platform, where he answered user questions on various topics. However, he also emphasized: “Everyone in the SPD wants to send the Union into the opposition. Really everyone.” He therefore considers a new coalition with the Union to be “completely unthinkable”.
In surveys, such a coalition would be just about possible given the current status – unlike now then under the leadership of the SPD, which in the polls recently ranks well ahead of the Union. Much larger majorities would have tripartite coalitions from the SPD, the Greens and the FDP or from the Union, the Greens and the FDP. Kühnert, who does not seek a ministerial office after the election, had already spoken out vehemently against an alliance between the SPD and the Union after the previous federal election in 2017. In August of last year, he had not completely ruled out a renewed black-red alliance, but also described it as “terrible”.
Söder: Groko possible “if the SPD becomes weaker”
The possibility of a new Groko is meanwhile openly discussed in Union circles. For example, CSU boss Markus Söder described another alliance with the SPD as a possibility on the TV broadcaster Phoenix. “Can a grand coalition come again with the SPD,” said Söder, but restricted “if it gets weaker”. “The crucial thing is that we are stronger than the SPD, because that is what gives a federal government its claim to leadership,” said Söder, who claims that surveys have identified a trend reversal. Other Union politicians had recently rejected joining a new Groko as a new junior partner. Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet left the question unanswered in the TV triumph last Sunday.
In a TV appearance on ZDF, SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz had expressed his will that the Union should “recover in the opposition” when asked by a viewer. Scholz is aiming for a traffic light coalition with the Greens and the FDP, and is confident of being able to achieve this. “I am an experienced negotiator and I know what is important to reassure you,” said Scholz in response to a question in an interview with the “Handelsblatt” on Thursday. The incumbent Vice-Chancellor also praised FDP content, including a “midterm student loan” for 40 to 50 year olds and a share pension.
