The race for Brazil’s highest office is open again – the popular and controversial ex-president is celebrating a comeback. Support also comes from other parties.
After the narrow victory of left-wing Brazilian ex-head of state Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round of the presidential election, the Democratic Labor Party (PDT) of fourth-placed Ciro Gomes Lula pledged its support. “We made the decision to support whoever is closest to us,” said party leader Carlos Lupi, as seen in a video shared on social media. Right-wing incumbent Jair Bolsonaro means regression. On October 30th there will be a runoff between Lula and Bolsonaro.
PDT candidate Gomes said in a video that he was following his party’s decision. A statement from the Social Democrats (PSDB), who had supported third-placed Simone Tebet, was also expected on Tuesday. The social-liberal candidate received 4.2 percent of the vote on Sunday, Gomes 3 percent.
According to experts, potential voters of the two had decided in favor of Bolsonaro shortly before the first round. The incumbent received support from the governor of the important state of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, on Tuesday. The political scientist Luciana Veiga told the newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo”: “Lula has to close alliances more than ever for the second round.”
