You take to the streets – but are not heard. Women are becoming increasingly invisible in the cityscape of Kabul. Afghan women around the world are now protesting against the Taliban’s misogynist regime in Afghanistan under #DoNotTouchMyClothes. The protest is supposed to be in response to a demonstration organized by the radical Islamists in Kabul University. There, 300 women in black clothing and with their faces covered had gathered in the lecture rooms and waved the flags of the newly founded Islamic emirate of Afghanistan. Bahar Jahali, an Afghan historian and gender scholar, started the protest against the veiling with this picture. Other women around the world then shared photos of them in traditional colorful clothing. The musician Ariana Delawari writes about her picture: “My mom with me in her stomach, my aunts, my sisters in Afghan robes.” Before the Taliban came to power in August 2021, western clothing such as jeans or long-sleeved tops were common in large Afghan cities. These women often combined with a loose headgear. Women in burqas could also be seen in the capital – but they did not make up the majority of the cityscape. The online protest is a cry for help for the more than 14 million women in Afghanistan. According to Alison Davidian, UN officer for Afghanistan, her situation is getting worse and worse: “Every day we receive reports of regressions in women’s rights. Women are forbidden to leave the house without a mahram, a male companion. In some provinces they no longer go to work. Facilities providing basic assistance to women fleeing violence were attacked. Shelters for human rights defenders, including journalists and activists, are working at full capacity. “
