The new German coalition of CDU, SPD and FDP in Saxony-Anhalt only elected Reiner Haseloff as Prime Minister of the East German state in the second ballot. The incumbent received 53 votes in the Magdeburg state parliament on Thursday, 43 MPs voted no, there was one abstention. The CDU politician immediately accepted the election. The parliamentary groups of the CDU, SPD and FDP coalition have 56 of the total of 97 members. The 67-year-old Haseloff actually wanted to start his third term with a clear majority in the first ballot. There, however, only 48 MPs voted for him in a secret ballot. The CDU was able to defend its position as the strongest party in the state elections at the beginning of June. Until then, the Christian Democrats ruled in a coalition with the SPD and the Greens. After the election, the CDU opted for a coalition with the SPD and FDP, the first of its kind in Germany.
