On television, on posters – the top candidates of the parties are omnipresent these days. But there is no real enthusiasm for this political competition among many eligible voters.
Many voters find the current federal election campaign relatively boring.
In a survey by the YouGov opinion research institute on behalf of the German Press Agency, only four percent of those eligible to vote described the current election campaign as “extremely exciting”. 16 percent of those questioned rated the competition between the parties as “rather exciting”.
And although everything seems to be open about the government coalition at the moment, a total of 43 percent of the participants in the representative survey find the election campaign boring. 19 percent of them were even of the opinion that the competition for votes and the Chancellery was “extremely boring” this time. Around 29 percent of Germans find the current election campaign neither exciting nor boring. Seven percent of the respondents dared to answer the question “How exciting or boring have you found the election campaign for the 2021 federal election so far?” no judgment too.
In the meantime, those eligible to vote do not give the soon-to-be-outgoing government of the CDU, CSU and SPD a good report. When asked in which of nine policy areas – from climate protection to the digitization of administration – progress had been made under the current government of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), 46 percent of those questioned answered: “There was no progress in any of these areas.”
Only seven percent of the adult German citizens are of the opinion that the goal of creating more affordable housing has come a little closer under the current government. Eight percent of Germans see progress in animal welfare. The number of those who have seen a positive development in the equipment of the Bundeswehr in recent years is just as small. After all, 16 percent of Germans have the feeling that progress has been made in integrating people with a migration background. 17 percent of those eligible to vote believe that the disadvantage of women in working life has decreased under this government – the highest approval rating among the policy areas surveyed.
Overall, those who voted for the CDU or CSU in the 2017 federal elections are most satisfied with the performance of the current government. Dissatisfaction is greatest among AfD voters.
