A former head of government, an incumbent president, a message: Take Putin seriously.
Angela Merkel said at the ceremony for the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”: “The attack on the Ukraine is a “profound caesura and one in which we are all well advised, to take words seriously and to deal with them seriously and not to classify them as bluffs from the outset”.
The Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a speech to the Australian Lowy Institute: “NATO must be able to Rule out the use of nuclear weapons by Russia. What is important, however – and that is why I am turning to the international community, as I did before February 24th – is that it are preemptive strikes, so they know what’s in store for them, if they use it.” His statements caused a stir on the Russian side. A Zelenskyi spokesman, however, dismissed the claim and stressed that Zelenskyi’s demand had been misunderstood.
