An explosion rocked the Crimean Bridge over the Kerch Strait at 6 a.m. Saturday. The cause is not yet clear. According to the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin is setting up a commission to investigate.
On Saturday morning there was an explosion on the Crimean bridge. This is reported by the portal Kerch.fm. Local residents posted photos and videos from the scene. It shows a train on fire on the railway track. In addition, part of the highway collapsed.
The explosion happened at 6 a.m. The cause is still speculated. There are suspicions that a missile may have hit the bridge. Others say it was an act of sabotage. Russian state media claim that a wagon at a railway cistern exploded. However, they do not explain how part of the road could have been destroyed.
Traffic across the bridge has been halted. A ferry connection is being checked, according to Simferopol.
Putin convenes a commission
Kyiv had repeatedly threatened to attack the Crimean Bridge since the beginning of the war. The Ukrainian leadership had repeatedly requested long-range heavy weapons from the west, which could also be used to attack the bridge. Recently there were incidents with exploded drones in the Kerch region.
Russia had warned against shelling the bridge and threatened to target command centers in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv if it did. According to the Kremlin, Putin has been informed of the serious fire on the bridge to the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea. The head of state will set up a commission to investigate the causes of the fire, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Crimean Bridge as a symbol of “unity and freedom”
It was personally inaugurated by Vladimir Putin in May 2018. It is the first land connection between the annexed peninsula and the Russian mainland: 19 kilometers long, costing three billion euros and extremely symbolic. At the opening, Vladimir Putin described the monumental building as a symbol of “unity and freedom”.
At that time, the Russian President insisted on being the first to cross the bridge. In bright sunshine, Putin, wearing jeans and a sporty jacket, got behind the wheel of an orange truck made by the Russian brand Kamaz, which enjoys cult status in Russia, and crossed the structure – at the head of a column of trucks – in 16 minutes. In Crimea, he was greeted by an applauding crowd. The bridge builders thanked the Russian head of state in a media-effective manner: The construction workers shouted that he was “the best president”. “And you are the best people and the best construction workers,” Putin said in turn.
