Thousands of migrants have gathered under a bridge between the US and Mexico. The mayor of Del Rio is overwhelmed – and asks the authorities for help. Now the migrants are to be sent back by air.
In view of the pictures of thousands of migrants camping under a bridge in the US state of Texas on the border with Mexico, the US government has announced that it will increase its deportation flights. The number of deportation flights to Haiti and other countries in the region as well as their passenger capacities should be expanded “in the next 72 hours,” the homeland security ministry said on Saturday.
In addition, the border guards have assigned 400 additional officers to ensure order in the wild migrant camp. The living conditions of the migrants in the camp should be improved. At the same time, the government is working with the countries of origin of the people so that they can accept their citizens again.
Previously, pictures had caused a sensation, showing thousands of migrants – according to US media reports up to 14,000 people – living under a bridge on the Rio Grande in the border town of Del Rio in Texas. Most of the people in the camp are from Haiti and came to the United States from Mexico via the Rio Grande.
Migrants are becoming a dilemma for President Biden
Given the situation in Del Rio, President Biden came under fire from both opposition Republicans and his Democrats. The Republicans accused Biden of encouraging more migrants to travel to the US with his decision to allow Haitians to stay in the US after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in late July, even without a valid visa.
The US authorities processed more than 200,000 applications from migrants at the Mexican border in July and August, and most of the people were turned away. It was the highest number in more than ten years.
The situation on the border between Mexico and the United States is a huge political problem for Biden. The Republicans of ex-President Donald Trump are demanding a crackdown on illegal immigration and exploiting the issue as a tactical campaigner. Biden has promised a more humane refugee and immigration policy than under Trump and is being urged, especially by the left wing of the Democrats, to follow up on words with deeds.
