Pope Francis has called for people not to allow themselves to be influenced by concerns about the reputation of the Catholic Church when coming to terms with abuse scandals.
“On the contrary: only if we face the reality of these terrible incidents and humbly ask for forgiveness from the victims and their families, the church can find a way to be a trustworthy place of refuge and security for those in need”, said Francis in a video message.
The message went to the participants in a child protection conference in Warsaw with participants from 20 Central and Eastern European countries. The German Father Hans Zollner as the papal child protection commissioner is one of the co-organizers of the meeting. The Pope warned that the “contrition” must be turned into a “concrete path of reforms” – with the aim of preventing further abuse and strengthening trust.
“Admitting our mistakes and failures can make us feel vulnerable and weak,” said Francis. «But it can also lead to a time of wonderful grace, inner purification, which opens new horizons for love and service to one another.
