Discrimination: Stricter laws against sex harassment at work demanded

Those affected currently only have eight weeks to take action against sexual harassment in the workplace. Far too little for the anti-discrimination officer Ataman.

The Independent Federal Commissioner for Anti-Discrimination, Ferda Ataman, calls for stricter laws against sexual harassment in the workplace. The legislature has so far given harassed persons eight weeks to assert claims. “But #MeToo has shown that many women can only talk about it years later or do not dare to take action against their employer. That is why the period must be extended to twelve months,” Ataman demanded in the Funke media group’s newspapers on the occasion of the fifth anniversary the #MeToo debate.

It is also necessary to give those affected the opportunity to file a joint complaint. So far they could only do it alone, she explained.

In 2017, the English hashtag MeToo (me too) on social networks sparked a global debate about sexual harassment. “Women have felt encouraged to share their experiences. #MeToo was a liberation in 2017 for women who had previously remained silent,” said Ataman. “Sexual harassment in the workplace is real – regardless of whether it is a large corporation or a small company. It is therefore very important that employees no longer remain silent and that the taboo that sometimes lies on the subject break through.”
