Shortly before the runoff election between Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro and his challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the mood in the country is tense. Shots are fired in the state of São Paulo.
A candidate for the post of governor in the Brazilian state of São Paulo has had to abandon an election campaign event in a favela after being shot at. A video on the G1 news portal showed Tarcísio de Freitas, an ally of right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, journalists and other people taking cover in a building.
According to the police, one person was killed on the street by the shots in Paraisópolis. “It is still a bit premature to speak of an assassination,” said Sao Paulo State Public Security Secretary João Camilo. He announced a full investigation.
De Freitas, who surprisingly won the first round of the gubernatorial election, wrote on Twitter: “During our visit to the (training and study center) Polo Universitário in Paraisópolis, we were attacked by criminals.” He later spoke of an “act of intimidation,” which he took as a sign that he was not welcome in the slum.
Paraisópolis, where 100,000 people live, is an example of the organization and innovation of favelas in Brazil. The poor district even had doctors and ambulances under contract during the corona pandemic. Paraisópolis is controlled by the powerful Brazilian crime syndicate Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC).
