Diplomacy: Macron seeks solidarity with India in the Indo-Pacific

The French government feels offended by Great Britain, the United States and Australia. President Macron is demonstratively seeking proximity to India.

French President Emmanuel Macron and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized their willingness to take joint action in the Indo-Pacific during telephone consultations.

The aim is to promote regional stability and the rule of law while avoiding any form of supremacy, the Elysée Palace announced on Tuesday. France wants to contribute to the strategic independence of India also at the industrial and technological level, whereby it is about trusting relationships between two strategic partners. Economic relations in particular should be expanded.

The Franco-Indian consultations shortly follow the announcement of a new “security alliance” between the USA, Great Britain and Australia. In this context, Australia had canceled the billion-dollar purchase of conventional French submarines and announced that it would procure nuclear-powered submarines with American and British help. As a result, France feels excluded as a strategic partner in the region.
