So far, the CDU and FDP have collected the most large donations in this election campaign. But the Greens also have financially strong supporters behind them.
The Greens recently received a donation of 1.25 million euros from a Dutch entrepreneur. Large donations that exceed the amount of 50,000 euros are not an isolated case in election years: As the data from the German Bundestag shows, most of the parties represented in parliament collect a high number of donations of over 50,000 euros, especially in those years which a new Bundestag is elected. In 2017, a total of 52 large donations were made to the parties, compared to only 22 donations in the previous year. In the current year, the number of donations is already 61 (as of September 8th) and thus exceeds that of the election years 2017 and 2013. In 2021, the Greens received the two highest individual donations of one million euros and the above 1.25 million euros. Party donations over 50,000 euros must be reported to the Bundestag.

These donations in the millions are likely to have posed a dilemma for the Greens, after all they have been campaigning for the introduction of an upper limit for party donations for years. Since 2013, the Union has received most of the major donations from all parties currently represented in the Bundestag, as this Statista chart shows. The FDP follows in second place, followed by the SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen.
The AfD and the Left each received a large donation and are thus at the bottom of the ranking. Large donations flow from the armaments industry, real estate companies and the tobacco lobby, among other things, as an evaluation of the non-partisan and independent internet platform parliamentwatch.de for the year 2019 has shown.
