Angela Merkel goes on a farewell tour through her constituency. The outgoing Chancellor goes into raptures – and holds out the prospect of a return.
The outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) raved about her constituency during a farewell tour. This is one of the most beautiful, said Merkel on Tuesday on Rügen. “I would even say, directly the most beautiful in Germany.” She also liked the fact that people could be silent here. So you could talk openly and honestly without constantly creating headlines. “That really helped my work.”
Angela Merkel is not running in the federal election
As a direct candidate, Merkel had received the Bundestag mandate in her constituency in every election since 1990. In the election on Sunday, she will run neither as a candidate for Chancellor nor as a candidate for the Bundestag.
In a recently built hall of the technical relief organization in Bergen auf Rügen, she emphasized the importance of the work of volunteers and the good equipment for this. With regard to the development of unemployment in her constituency, she spoke of a clear improvement compared to the early 2000s. “But of course we have to fight over and over again.” There are problems, for example, with recruiting skilled workers or with medical care in rural areas. For many years, the emigration of young people in particular had a negative impact on the region. But because of digitization and the experiences during the corona pandemic, life in the country may have become more attractive.
Merkel had previously taken part in the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a cycle path on the island of Ummanz before she met with representatives of the community. Local writer Rita Hoff wished Merkel all the best for the future in Low German and that she would have fond memories of the region. The CDU member of the state parliament and Ummwanzer Mayor Holger Kliewe and Merkel’s successor as CDU direct candidate, Georg Günther, thanked her for her work.
Merkel announced that she would use the newly built bicycle paths in the region herself. “I’m not moving to Hamburg either, which is sometimes said.” She announced that she would stay in Berlin and the Uckermark. “From there it is not far to my former constituency due to the beautiful A20”, said Merkel, referring to the Autobahn 20.
Merkel owns a dacha in the Uckermark
She was born in Hamburg, but her family moved from the Federal Republic to the GDR and later moved to Templin. She still has a dacha there today. Compared to its constituency, the Uckermark is not all that different. “Only that the Baltic Sea is missing.”
A joint campaign appearance was planned for the evening together with Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet (CDU) in Stralsund.
On September 26th, the citizens of Germany elect a new Bundestag – and thus also decide on the future government. Our interactive graphic shows current surveys, statistics and much more.
